Dentures & Partial Dentures

What Are Dentures?

A denture is a removable dental appliance that serves as a replacement for missing teeth by resting on the tissue. They are made to closely resemble your natural teeth and can even enhance your smile.

There are two main types of dentures: complete dentures and partial dentures.

  • Complete dentures are used when all of the teeth are missing.
  • Partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain. A partial denture not only fills the spaces created by missing teeth but also helps prevent your other teeth from shifting out of place.

Types of Complete Dentures

There are several kinds of complete dentures, each designed for different stages of the healing process:

Conventional Dentures

These are made after the teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has fully healed.

  • Gum tissue usually takes 6 to 8 weeks to heal enough for firmer foods.
  • The underlying bone may take 6 to 8 months to finish healing and shrinking.

Interim Dentures

These are temporary dentures made to wear during the healing process. They help patients avoid being without teeth during those first few weeks or months. Once healing is complete, a conventional denture can be made.

Immediate Dentures

Immediate dentures are made ahead of time and placed immediately after teeth are removed.

  • This prevents a period without teeth, but as the gums and bone heal, they will shrink.
  • Adjustments and a reline will be needed down the road to ensure proper fit.

Durability of Dentures

Dentures are very durable and can last many years. However, due to normal wear, they may need to be remade, repaired, or readjusted over time.

Common Reasons for Dentures

  • Complete denture: Loss of all teeth in an arch
  • Partial denture: Loss of several teeth in an arch
  • Enhancing your smile and supporting facial tissues
  • Improving chewing, speech, and digestion

What to Expect When Getting Dentures

Getting dentures typically involves several appointments over a few weeks.

  1. Impressions & Measurements: Highly accurate molds are taken to begin the process.
  2. Try-Ins: You may have a few fitting appointments to test shape, color, and comfort.
  3. Final Fit: At your last appointment, the denture is adjusted and placed for a natural, comfortable fit.

It’s normal to experience:

  • Increased saliva flow
  • Some soreness
  • Minor speech or chewing difficulty

These issues usually subside as your mouth adjusts to the new appliance.
